About This Video

In this video I put the Universal Audio SD-1 through real-world creator testing and stack it up against the mics everybody keeps buying: the Shure MV7X, the FIFINE Tank 1, Tank 6, and the FIFINE AM8 Pro. I even had to re-record the whole thing because I found a Podcastage comparison I somehow overlooked: the Music Villa MV-3 is basically the same capsule/build situation as the SD-1, and the difference is minute. So yeah—now you’ve got a legit “do I pay the upcharge?” decision to make, especially when the SD-1 drops on sale. I also break down the Hemisphere plugin situation because I originally thought you needed a UA interface. You don’t. It’s a downloadable VST: register the mic with the code, install it, and you can use it in Wave Link, Resolve, whatever. I demo the DN7 (SM7B-ish) and DN20 (RE20-ish) settings, and I’ll be honest—those presets don’t perfectly “become” those mics, but they do make the SD-1 sound better fast, like you already EQ’d it. Big takeaway: for like 80–90% of streamers and spoken-word creators, the SD-1 is a one-and-done mic when you pair it with something like a Wave XLR and basic processing (noise removal + de-esser). Stop buying three “almost” mics—buy it nice so you don’t buy it twice.
