About This Video

At 55, I’ve had to completely change how I do my makeup — not because I fancied a reinvention, but because what used to work just stopped working. In this video I share five things I’ve learned the hard way about mature makeup: stop chasing “perfect skin,” get really intentional about placement, and pay attention to how products sit on the skin (not just what they promise on the bottle). The more I tried to fix every wrinkle, bit of redness, and age spot, the worse it looked — because I just kept adding more layers until my skin stopped looking like skin. I also talk about why placement matters more than product now. I’ve changed things like my eyeliner flick (straight out works better on my hooded lids), and I’ve moved blush up to the high points of my cheeks so it lifts instead of dragging. I’m also here to say powder isn’t the enemy — excess is. I don’t powder under my eyes anymore (my under-eye crepiness is my bugbear), but I will lightly set through the cheeks and the end of my T-zone, and I often reach for the Catrice Magic Shine Eraser instead. Finally, I treat different parts of my face differently and aim for a satin, “Goldilocks” finish — not matte, not overly dewy — because texture matters more than coverage on mature skin.
