About This Video

In this video, I share how I improved my Italian pronunciation at home without paying for a tutor. First, I want to say it clearly: it’s totally okay to have an accent in a foreign language—most people will. But I really wanted to improve my accent in Italian because I felt like I could if I put the work in, and honestly, I just wanted the challenge. The biggest thing that helped me was shadowing and mimicking Italian speakers from TV shows and YouTube. And yes, you’ve probably heard of shadowing before, but the key is actually doing it correctly: speak along with the person and match their tone and speed as closely as you can. That’s how you pick up intonation and those little intricacies you don’t even realize you’re missing. I also overexaggerate sounds when I repeat things back on my own—moving my mouth and tongue around to find what gets me closest to the real Italian sound—because sometimes your mouth just isn’t used to moving that way yet. I talk about common mistakes too (especially for Americans), like closing the Italian “O” too much—think “bonjouro” vs. a more open “buongiorno.” And my biggest tip: record yourself. It might feel embarrassing, but it’s the fastest way to hear your mistakes and track real progress.
