If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not fluent yet,” this video is for you. A lot of language learners are chasing fluency without actually knowing what it means and that misunderstanding can slow you down more than anything else. In this video, I break down what “fluent” really means, why most people get it wrong, and the signs that you might already be more fluent than you think. We’ll also talk about what you should focus on instead if your goal is to actually speak and have real conversations. If you’re learning a language and feel stuck between intermediate and “fluent,” this will help you shift your perspective and move forward with a lot more clarity. About This Video

In this video I’m talking about the word “fluent” and why so many of us get stuck chasing a definition that doesn’t really exist. The biggest myth is that fluency means speaking perfectly—no mistakes, understanding everything, and sounding like a native. But native speakers aren’t perfect either: they pause, forget words, use filler words, mess up tenses, and misunderstand things sometimes. So if perfection is the standard, then honestly… even a lot of natives wouldn’t “qualify.” The definition that actually helps me is this: fluency is being able to communicate your thoughts smoothly enough that the conversation keeps moving, and being able to think/respond without constantly translating in your head. I share three real signs you can use to check your own progress: (1) you can participate in conversations (not just answer), (2) you’re translating less and responding more naturally, and (3) you can handle real-life situations—ordering food, asking for directions, phone calls, even serious stuff like meetings. My biggest takeaway is that fluency is a spectrum, not a finish line, and the fastest way forward is getting comfortable sounding imperfect and prioritizing real conversation early.
