About This Video

In this video I’m sharing 11 Italian expressions I hear native speakers use all the time here in Bologna—and that you almost never learn from a textbook. After living in Italy for over 3 and a half years, I’ve realized that these little words are what make your Italian sound less “too formal” and way more natural in real conversations. I break down what each expression literally means vs. what it actually means in context, so you can understand Italians better and also start using the phrases yourself. We cover everyday staples like “figurati” (don’t mention it), “cioè” (I mean / like), and “insomma” (basically / kind of), plus super common reactions like “ma no” and “no vabbè” for shock or disbelief. I also explain “ci mancherebbe” as a reassuring “of course, no problem,” and the different uses of “magari” (maybe, but also “I wish/if only”). Then we get into more informal, younger-sounding options like “un botto” (a ton) and “un tipo/una tipa” (this guy/this girl), and I finish with “mi fa,” which Italians use a lot when telling stories (like “he goes / I go”) and in phrases like “mi fa ridere.”
