Tutorial #46 | Future Garage/Ambient Pentatonic Drones

Hello everyone :) In this week's tutorial we're going to make a few pentatonic drones perfect for ambient productions! The main idea behind these is that the pentatonic scale is very consonant & harmonic, so that means you can play all of the notes of your scale on top of this type of drones, unlike drones that are more chord specific where not all notes from your scale might work. **(At the start of the video I show you the guidelines of building the pentatonic scale to fit to your song so go to 2:02 if you wish to skip that part) The important thing in this type of drones is to introduce a combination of distortion & reverb to your source sound, play a few notes of the pentatonic scale & record the reverb tail that you get. After that you should get a nice reverb tail that with the help of limiters can become a more of a "frozen" reverb tail that doesn't decay in volume - which is the pentatonic drone. After you have your pentatonic drone, I show you how you can use some EQ & sidechain to make room for it in your mix without creating too much mud. One thing to note - You can play with the amout of distortion, reverb & their place on the effects chain and thus creating wildly different results, like for example the intro of Skrillex's "Fire Away" that has a much shorter reverb decay and more distortion, but still creates the same desired effect of the pentatonic drone.
