Hey!! We passed 1000 subs yesterday!! I'm so happy & thankful for all of you so as a quick little thank you gift I'm doing a double upload this week - this video today & another video (part 2) on Tuesday :) So in this video we're discussing microtonal intervals which are a key part of various non western music cultures, including gamelan music. In gamelan you have a concept called "ombak" which translates into "wave" - basically this means tonal instruments have the same note twice - one time pitched slightly above the original note and the second time it's pitched slightly below. This creates microtonality in the music and when both of these are played together you get a detuned "wave-y" sound. In this video I show you how you can recreate that effect* by randomization options in both Massive X and Serum. There's a "sequel" video to this tutorial coming on Tuesday where I'm going to show you how you can use these microtonal patches in your music, by breaking down a short beat I've made with the patch. If there's a subject/sound you want me to cover in one of my future tutorials let me know in the comments below ;) Enjoy! ----------- * - by that effect I'm talking about having notes that are slightly above and slightly below from one another in the same synth. In order to recreate the "wave" you can create 2 instances of this patch and tell both of these to play the same note at the same time, and the randomization should create differently detuned wave effects every time.
