In this video I’m messing around with Serum 2 FX by building a hybrid flanger/phaser “all-in-one” device, inspired by the EarthQuaker Devices Pyramids pedal. I’ve always felt the stock flanger and phaser in Serum don’t give you a ton of detail (not many controls), so instead I build the effect using four filter instances: flanger minus, flanger plus, phaser minus, and phaser plus. The core idea is simple: a step LFO modulates the cutoff of all four filters, so the “position” of the flanging/phasing moves over time and you get that animated, singing texture on guitars and synths. I set it up with a couple macros to keep it playable: one macro switches between the minus/plus versions, and another macro blends between phasing and flanging (I usually pick one, but you can sit in the middle for a mix). Then there’s a speed macro for the LFO rate, and a smooth macro to make it less stuttery/sample-and-hold-ish. I also add a second LFO that’s true sample-and-hold random, and a step/random macro crossfades the modulation between the stepped pattern and the random pattern (or mixes both). If things get weird and out of tune, I’ll even throw in something like Chroma to quantize it back to the scale.
