In this video I’m showcasing a recording experiment I call “Percussion Buzz.” If you’ve ever been in a room with an acoustic kit, you know that thing where the kick, toms, or even a bass guitar excites the snare and you get that sympathetic snare-buzz texture. There are plugins that add snare buzz, but I wanted the percussion equivalent using real instruments—so I recorded a bunch of shakers, bells, brushes, corks, and a gyro, in two extremes: the quietest, ASMR-ish takes, and the loudest, anti-ASMR “white noise-ish” takes. I walk through my recording setup (Zoom H5 close XY stereo + Zoom H2n room mic in mid-side), why I record quiet material at night, and how I prep the audio: find clean room-noise sections, denoise carefully, align close/room mics (I clap at the start), then chop and organize everything in FL Studio. From there I build “inner mixes” (all shakers, all wood, all metal, full mix, etc.) so you get a lot of variety from the same session. Finally, I show how I actually use percussion buzz musically: I sidechain a gate with a “ghost kick” (or a bass guitar) so the buzz only opens when it’s being “excited.” With longer release times it feels like the percussion is resonating and trailing off, and it adds liveliness, texture, and a mellow high-frequency layer without stepping on the main drums.
