About This Video

This loft area in our house has always been a bit of a mess, so when my wife gave me the go-ahead to turn it into a movie/man cave, I jumped at the chance. After building and mounting the IKEA Besta cabinets (and doing some basic cleaning and TV cable management), I upgraded the lighting from harsh overheads to a fully layered, cinematic Philips Hue setup around our 85-inch TV. In this video, I show you exactly how I added backlighting to the TV, under-cabinet glow, and a few accent pieces—while hiding every single cable. For the TV, I used a 16ft Hue light strip and a mounting bracket kit that makes clean corners way easier and helps the strip adhere better (they’re a game changer). Under the cabinets, a 10ft Hue strip fit perfectly, and I drilled clean pass-through holes with a hole saw kit and finished them with grommets so nothing looks messy. To finish the room, I added an IKEA Fado lamp with a Hue smart bulb for that soft, diffused glow, plus a lighted planter (with a realistic faux snake plant because… we don’t keep plants alive). Everything ties together with the Hue Bridge, the Wall Tap Dial for quick scene control, and Alexa voice commands for effortless movie-night lighting.
