About This Video

In this video I show you my step-by-step process for recording clean vocals in Cubase from start to finish. I’m recording with Lisa Nasa, and we start from the most important part: setting up your audio interface the right way. I go to Studio > Audio Connections to confirm my input and output are using the correct driver, then I make sure the input is MONO (not stereo) so the vocal sits in the center and doesn’t feel like it’s coming from only the left or right ear. After that, I create and name the vocal track, turn on monitoring to confirm the mic is working, and do a quick test record before we commit to full takes. From there, I explain how I handle latency by adjusting buffer size in Studio Setup. If you want to hear yourself while recording, I recommend keeping the buffer low (I usually do 64, and I don’t advise going above 128). Then I build a simple recording chain: light tuning (I used Waves Tune and set it to the song key/scale), a gate for noise reduction (Cubase stock Gate), and a basic compressor (Cubase stock Compressor) aiming around -3 to -7 dB gain reduction for consistency. Finally, I show how I do takes, duplicates, quick edits/fades for clean blends, and a send reverb (FabFilter Pro-R) to give the vocal a live feel, plus how I create backup vocals while sharing the same effects.
