In this video, I’m breaking down why your mix can sound good in your studio but fall apart everywhere else—even if you have “good” speakers, plugins, and hardware. The first thing I tell you to check is your room, because your room literally has a sound. If it’s untreated, full of reflections, or has echoes, it will mess with what you’re hearing and the decisions you make while mixing, and that’s how you end up with a mix that doesn’t translate. Next, I talk about reference tracks—because a lot of people don’t actually know how to use them. Referencing doesn’t mean copying a song; it means carrying 2–3 tracks in the same genre (especially if you’re mixing Afrobeats) and listening for what you like: how the vocals sit on the beat, how loud and controlled the bass feels, and the overall balance. Then you go back to your own mix and use those references to level out and correct your issues. Lastly, I cover speaker placement: get your monitors on stands, set them at ear height, and form an equilateral triangle with your listening position. Fix these three things and your mix can improve 10–20x.
