About This Video

In this video I show you how I pitch-correct vocals inside Cubase using VariAudio—especially when your artist is falling flat on some notes. I literally just double-click the vocal track, open VariAudio on the left, and you’ll see the “makeup” of the vocal recording as those points on the timeline. From there, I select everything (Command A / Control A), set the correct scale (in my example we’re in C# major), then I hit Quantize Pitch so it slams the notes into the right key. I also show you the settings that help you stay musical: turning on “Show Scale Notes Guide” and “Snap Pitch Editing” so you don’t start pushing notes outside the scale. If a particular note is still off, I manually move it up or down until it sits right. And when the vocal has too much vibrato and feels shaky, I use Straighten Curve—but I don’t advise flattening it completely unless that’s the style you want. Most times I keep a bit of wobbliness so it still sounds natural. I also quickly demonstrate how I duplicate and repeat vocal parts in time using bar mode, split on the nearest bar, then Option/Alt-drag to repeat and tighten the performance.
