In this video I show you how I make a modern Afrobeat x Afroswing type beat in FL Studio—from the tempo choice all the way to melodies, bass, and vocal chops. I start by setting the tempo in that typical Afroswing range (around 98–105 BPM) and then I build the drum groove with the right sounds (this part is important, because if your drum sounds are wrong, the vibe just won’t land). I begin with rim shots, extend the pattern for more control, add a punchy kick, then I layer rim sounds the right way—layering different tones so it’s not just “louder but not better.” After that, I add percs (and I explain why I like to dodge the kick with percs so the rhythm feels less predictable), then I build hats with simple steps, extra notes, and rolls, plus open hats and optional hat loops. From there we move into chords and melody: I break down the simple 1-3-5 chord idea, show how I use MIDI chord packs for inspiration (and how I delete/reshape notes and transpose to stay in key), then I layer chord sounds so one doesn’t swallow the other. Finally, I add a processed guitar lead (chorus, EQ, reverb, delay), ambient pads, an 808/bassline that starts simple, and I show a quick way to pitch vocal loops using relative major so everything sits in the same key.
