About This Video

In this video, I show you how I set up a clean vocal recording session in Cubase from start to finish, so you don’t have to build everything from scratch every single time. I start from an empty project, then I go straight into Studio Setup to confirm the correct audio driver, and I set my buffer size as low as possible (I always recommend 64 or 128) so monitoring feels tight while recording. After that, I set up Audio Connections properly—your mic should be a mono input bus (not stereo), because you’re recording with one microphone. From there, I create the core tracks: a stereo “Beats” track, then my lead vocal tracks with a tuning plugin inserted (I used Waves Tune Real-Time, but Auto-Tune works too). I duplicate the lead tracks to move faster, then route them into a lead vocal group bus so I can control everything easily. On the bus, I add a simple but effective chain: RX Voice De-noise (or a gate if you don’t have RX), RX Breath Control, a stock Cubase compressor (4:1, threshold around -30, attack around 8–10ms), and a quick high-pass EQ up to about 100Hz. Finally, I set up reverb and delay as FX sends (always 100% wet), EQ the reverb return to clean it up, and sidechain the delay so it stays out of the way of the main vocal. I also build backup vocal tracks and a backup bus, color-code everything for organization, and save the whole session as a Cubase template so you can load it and start recording immediately.
