About This Video

In this video, I show you how to mix vocals in FL Studio step by step, the same way I do it for Afro R&B/Afrobeats-type songs. The first thing I always do is detect the tempo, because if your BPM is wrong, your time-based effects like reverb and delay will sound off and become hard to control. After that, I link my beat, lead vocal, and backup vocal to the mixer, then I get the key/scale (I use tunebat’s analyzer) so my tuning is actually musical and not guesswork. From there, I tune the lead vocal (Waves Tune in my case), then I clean it properly using RX tools—Voice De-noise, Mouth De-click, and Breath Control—so the vocal is clean but not “too clean.” Next, I compress for consistency (I like Pro-C 2 because it’s visual), EQ with Parametric EQ 2 to cut low end and remove resonances, then I use multiband compression to control boxy mids (usually around 600–800 Hz). I also do serial compression (LA76) and a second EQ (my favorite vocal EQ, SH 73) to polish the tone. Finally, I add width with a subtle stereo effect, then build my space with two reverbs (short/room and long/ambient), using a reverb calculator to set pre-delay and decay to match the tempo. I sidechain the long reverb so it tucks under the vocal, balance the beat against the vocal, and if the vocal still isn’t present, I blend in parallel compression. I also show you how I treat backup vocals—harder tuning, more low-cut, slight panning, and more “spacy” reverb—so they support the lead without fighting it.
