About This Video

In this video, I showed you my full workflow for making a Dancehall/Afro-swing inspired beat in FL Studio—Wizkid x Shenseea x Vybz Kartel vibes. First, I set the tempo to 96 BPM (Dancehall is usually around 90–100), then I built the drums from scratch using my Teflon Afro Swing Drum Kit. I start with the rim shot pattern, add kicks for bounce, and I like to layer rim shots sometimes to make it sound more unique. After that, I add open hats and shaker/hat loops, then I stretch and trim the loops properly (4 bars, 8 bars, etc.)—because you’re not forced to use loops exactly as they come. That’s how you make it your own. Next, I moved to chords using Triton (one of my favorite VSTs). I worked in D# minor, used snap to scale, built simple 1-3-5 chords, then added extensions like 7ths to make the voicing more interesting. I also shared a “little trick” I use: over-compressing piano with a compressor (like Pro-C2) to give it presence and sustain, then shaving low end with EQ. Finally, I added a flute-style ambience melody with reverb to push it back, programmed an 808 that follows the root notes, added slides, and arranged the beat (intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, outro) with simple variations like removing kicks in one section.
