About This Video

In this video, I show you how I cook up an Afro dancehall / Amapiano x Afrobeat type beat in FL Studio—Tyla, Burna Boy, Ruger kind of vibe. I start from the tempo (I usually sit around 96–108 BPM, and here I set it to 102), then I build the drums step by step using my Teflon Afro Swing drum kit. You’ll see my kick and rimshot patterns, how I layer rimshots to make the groove heavier, and how I approach percussion (my simple rule: try to dodge the kick so the rhythm breathes). I also humanize the hats with velocity, add ghost notes, and use open hats to give the bounce that Afro drums need. After the drums, I move into chords because chords are the foundation for your melody. I play a simple progression in E major with snap-to-scale on, then I open the chords up by pushing notes to higher octaves so it doesn’t sound too dark. From there, I stack layers on purpose—Morphine (one of my favorite stock plugins) for a plucky ambience layer, then a guitar layer with chorus, reverb, and ping-pong delay to make it wider. I finish by adding a lead melody, a counter melody (stock sounds work too), an ambient melody (long sustain), pads for chorus energy, and a Triton bass, then I split by channel and arrange everything into a full beat.
