About This Video

In this video, I show you how to make an Afro dancehall / Afrobeat type beat in FL Studio, inspired by that Tyla x Wizkid vibe (Ruger, Burna Boy, Shenseaa kind of pocket too). First thing I do is set the tempo—Afro dancehall usually sits around 85–100 BPM, and for this one I stay at 100 BPM. Then I build a simple, solid drum pattern using my Teflon Afro Swing drum kit: kick, snare, rim layers, hats, and a groove rhythm. After that, I start pushing it more into Afrobeat by adding percussions and a shaker loop, plus I show you a quick fix if any percussion is acting weird—just turn that option off and you’re good. From there, I move into chords and melodies. I use Lounge Lizard for the chord progression in F minor, keep it around the 4th/5th octave as a guide, and then I add extensions (including bass notes) to make it fuller. I humanize the chords with Alt/Option + S (velocity and strum), then layer bell textures (because these styles love percussive bells), add a counter melody with SKY Keys, and bring in a catchy piano idea. Finally, I build the low-end with a Triton Extreme bass, add saturation (Soft Clipper / Fast Dist / Blood Overdrive), and top it off with a simple 808 pattern, plus pads in Xenology to lift the vibe and help you arrange it into a full production.
