Scenic Drive from Eilat to the Western Ramon Crater via Highway 90 and 40

This scenic road trip starts in Eilat, Israel’s southernmost city along the Red Sea, and follows a sweeping northbound route through the heart of the Negev Desert via Highways 90 and 40. Leaving Eilat, the drive follows Highway 90 along the Arava Valley, bordered by the Edom Mountains in Jordan to the east and the Negev Highlands to the west. Turning west near Ketura or Tzihor Junction, the route climbs through expansive desert ridges and high plateaus along Highway 40. The landscape transitions from flat arid plains to rugged erosion landforms, gradually revealing panoramic views toward the Ramon Crater. The drive ends at the western rim of Makhtesh Ramon, one of the most prominent geological features in the region, offering access to lookout points and hiking trails. This route contrasts the lush subtropical atmosphere of Eilat with the barren, elevated desert of the Ramon Crater, covering roughly 140 km in about 2.5–3 hours of driving time.
