Hiking the Lassen Volcanic Wilderness Lakes | Part 1: Summit Lake to Horseshoe Lake | 4K HDR

This video documents the first half of a loop hike through the wilderness lakes area of Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California. The complete loop covers approximately 25.0 km (15.5 mi) with around 700 m (2,297 ft) of cumulative elevation gain, beginning and ending at Summit Lake. The overall route passes several remote backcountry lakes, including Echo Lake, Upper Twin Lake, Lower Twin Lake, and Horseshoe Lake. This first section documents the hike from Summit Lake to Horseshoe Lake through forested volcanic terrain and remote sections of the Lassen backcountry. The route descends through areas affected by recent wildfire activity near Summit Lake and Echo Lake before continuing through quieter lake basins and mixed conifer forest toward the Twin Lakes region and Horseshoe Lake. Portions of this landscape still show visible wildfire impacts associated with the 2021 Dixie Fire and subsequent burn areas in the park’s southeastern wilderness. Filmed in real time in 4K HDR with ambient forest hiking sounds, the video presents an objective visual record of trail conditions, volcanic landscapes, forest recovery, remote lake environments, and the progression through the eastern Lassen wilderness.
