About This Video

Finally, it’s begun—this Quartermaster is on its way to the desert for a punishing 2000km run, and this video is me getting brutally honest about what a full touring canopy really means. I walk through what changed from the early setup (including lifting it—twice) to bolting on the full canopy and suddenly dealing with the elephant in the room: weight. With a full canopy you gain space, but you also gain clutter and bad habits if you’re not disciplined. I also call out the “40 PSI club” mindset—shortcuts like that don’t work anymore once you’ve built a heavy touring rig. I break down how I’m trying to create proper “flow” inside the canopy—every item needs a home that makes sense, especially the stuff you use all the time. I cover the upright vs chest fridge debate with real numbers (kilos vs litres), why I went upright for convenience, and how cooking, pantry space, drawers and tables all need to work together. Then I get into power and water: I’ve got 400Ah of battery and a 2000W inverter (more power than I have water), but only 65L of water on board—so remote travel means I’ll be carrying extra water and rethinking priorities. Lastly, I talk about the downside of a full canopy: the extra overhang. It adds length, changes approach angles, and can catch you out in car parks or steep climbs. The real test is coming—two weeks living out of it in the desert—so we’ll see how many words I’m eating later.
