Fuel prices are cooked, and it’s changing 4WDing fast—so in this video I get stuck into what I call the LandCruiser lockout. I look at how long it would’ve realistically taken to save for a LandCruiser across the decades (when you factor in median income and the basics you need to survive), and then compare that to today’s 300 Series reality. The punchline is brutal: on the numbers, a new 300 can be “mathematically impossible” unless you’re saving for about 9.4 years… and by then you’re basically buying yesterday’s model. Then I bring it back to the part that hurts every time you pull up at the bowser—what diesel prices actually mean on real trips. We talk towing reality (I share a run in a tuned 300 towing a van that worked out to 29L/100km and about $1.02 per kilometre at $3.50/L), and why availability can be even scarier than price on remote routes like the Canning. I also run through simple ways to keep trips alive without blowing the budget: slow down a bit, change how you travel (stay longer, move less), think hard before mods like rooftop tents and big tyres, and put your money where it matters—like a good sleeping setup.
