Two weeks into the Canning Stock Route and Day 14 decides to remind us who’s boss. I’m talking broken gear, fuel worries, constant corrugations—and then we hit the thing that looks easy until it isn’t: a salt lake. In the daylight it can feel solid, but once the sun drops the “thermal flip” kicks in—moisture creeps back up under the crust and what was firm turns into slurry. I’ve sunk one before in a lake that looked dry as anything, so I’m already on edge. We push on toward Well 42, scout the low sections, and I send the drone ahead because I’m not gambling blind out there. Then everything starts stacking up at once—comms are messy, light’s disappearing, and the boys start getting into trouble as the track gets wetter by the minute. Rafa powers in too hard, goes sideways and buries it, and Chris isn’t far behind with skinny tyres that just want to knife down into the holes. While we’re trying to recover cars with Maxtrax, lockers and a winch, we’ve also got dingoes circling in the dark—proper pack behaviour—so I’m juggling safety, fatigue, and getting everyone through before it turns into an all-night disaster. We end up building bridges with Maxtrax, filling ruts, winching, and trying to stay calm… right up until another problem pops up and we’re wedging tracks where they don’t belong.
