About This Video

We’re about a third of the way into the Canning Stock Route now, and it’s one of those points where there’s basically no turning back—turn around and you risk running out of fuel. The pressure is on because weather is building (we’re hearing up to 100mm of rain), our supplies are getting low, and both Troopy tanks are dry. With Kunawarritji (Well 33) being the lifeline for food, water, fuel, and a possible exit if the conditions turn ugly, we’ve got to make smart calls and sometimes sacrifice the “nice camp” to keep moving. Day 8 starts with a totally different desert vibe—cool, cloudy, dunes getting more chopped out, and the cars handling differently as we lighten up. We roll past more reminders that the CSR doesn’t care what you drive: trailers and wrecks on the side of the track, and later a burnt-out Prado right in the middle of the route. We also hit Lake Disappointment (Kumpupintil), and I show why you stay in the defined wheel tracks—step off them and you’ll sink, and getting bogged in a salt lake is not the kind of recovery you want. The big takeaway in this episode is managing risk: pick the right crossings, manage spinifex build-up before it becomes a fire, and when things go sideways, slow down and think. The “Billy can” mindset matters out here—calm beats panic every time.
