About This Video

In this video I dig into Gibson’s “resurrected” Maestro pedal line and explain why I think they’re basically total ripoffs at full price. I picked up two of them—the Aena Envelope Filter and the Discoverer Analog Delay—because I’m a delay guy (there’s no such thing as too many) and I realized I didn’t even own an envelope filter. I bought both on those crazy Guitar Center call-in deals at $40 a piece, and that sale pricing is a huge part of the story here. Right out of the box, I’ll give credit where it’s due: these pedals are built really well. They’re heavy, solid, the knobs feel good, and the switches feel sturdy. The Aena is very “wah-like” without a treadle, with a high/low switch to accent different frequencies, and it’s more subtle than I expected. The Discoverer is a simple 3-knob analog delay with a modulation switch, and it gets dirty and distorted on the repeats—very 50s sci-fi horror movie vibe. Here’s the takeaway: at $159 new, I wouldn’t buy these. On a deep sale at $40–$50, they’re a great value and I’d say buy them all day long. But at full price, there are better options that do more for the money, and I also don’t love that the line doesn’t even include a reverb.
