About This Video

In this video, I walk you through how I plan a simple, secure VLAN layout for a home network without overcomplicating things—whether you’re on Grandstream, UniFi, or TP-Link Omada. I explain VLANs in plain language (think “invisible walls” inside your digital home) and why segmentation matters for both security and performance. When everything lives on one flat network, you get unnecessary chatter and unnecessary risk. VLANs let you give each type of device its own space. Then I lay out the 5 VLANs I recommend for most homes: Management, Trusted, IoT, Guest, and Surveillance. I also address the big debate: VLAN 1 for management. In a home setup, I’m fine with a balanced approach—keep routers, switches, and access points in VLAN 1 (with static IPs and a non-default IP scheme), and keep everything else out. From there, I show how the Trusted VLAN handles your everyday PCs and servers, why IoT is a must-have, how Guest should be internet-only, and why cameras belong on their own Surveillance VLAN—often blocked from the internet so they can’t “call home.” Put it all together and you get a clean, scalable, easy-to-manage design.
