About This Video

In this Saturday Afternoon Live stream (right before the Christmas holidays), I hang out with the community and dig into a handful of viewer rack / homelab submissions. I love doing these because you get to see what people are building in the real world—what’s finished, what’s still in progress, and what folks are changing as they learn. I also ask the chat for feedback (keeping it respectful, of course), because sometimes a second set of eyes catches something you can improve. I also give an update on my own outdoor networking project here in North Carolina. I walk through how I’m bringing a new outdoor run online, including using PoE (802.3bt on the upstream side), surge protection, and grounding strategy so both ends of the indoor-to-outdoor cable are protected. I show my testing process (simple laptop plug-in and ping test) and explain my plan for mounting and grounding, including a practical “grounding plug” approach instead of immediately running a full #6 ground for the entire rack. Along the way, I share a little termination humor—because if you’ve ever pulled a wall jack and seen a wild termination, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
