About This Video

In this Saturday Afternoon Live, I kicked things off with a quick (and slightly painful) real-world test of Zorin OS 18 on an older HP laptop. I had been running Zorin flawlessly in a virtual machine on my UGREEN NAS, so I figured I’d breathe some new life into a “field laptop” I barely use anymore. Installation went fine, but Chromium/Chrome-based browsers were basically unusable at first—flickering and freezing—until I tried the common fixes (switching from Wayland to Xorg and disabling hardware acceleration). That got the browsers loading, but then the entire laptop started flashing black-to-desktop repeatedly, so I called it: not worth burning more time on a piece of hardware that’s been slow even on Windows 10. From there, I shared a quick PSA for anyone using the Grandstream GWN7621E / GWN7062E: Grandstream released the “Grandstream Home” mobile app for setup/monitoring, including parental controls and remote management. Then I demoed the new Blackmagic Camera app updates—especially SRT and built-in streaming to YouTube/Twitch/Vimeo. I got SRT working to my Kiloview D350 decoder, but I’m not thrilled that “custom” requires importing an XML file instead of just filling out fields in-app. Live is live though, so I tested it in real time and showed what worked (and what still feels clunky).
