About This Video

If you’re thinking about setting up the Synology DS1525+ (or really any Synology NAS), this is the video you want to watch before you click around in DSM. I walk you step-by-step through the initial install from start to finish: installing your hard drives, doing the first boot, finding the NAS at find.synology.com, and letting the web assistant install the latest DSM 7.3.x. I also show you the basic DSM setup choices I recommend—like update settings and why I skip the Synology account and the “share diagnostics” prompts during initial setup. Once DSM is up, I move straight into the part that matters for most beginners: building your storage pool and volume the right way. I explain why I pick SHR for a 4-drive setup (easy management, mix drive sizes, one-drive fault tolerance, and great usable space) and why I choose BTRFS on all my NAS devices—snapshots are a big deal. Then I finish by locking down the NAS: disable the Admin and Guest accounts, set an auto-logout timer, disable SSH unless you truly need it, change the default DSM ports, force HTTPS, tighten password rules, enable user home folders, and turn on 2FA. And at the end, I give you my bonus tip: enable Account Protection to help defend against repeated failed sign-in attempts.
