About This Video

Decorating without completely breaking the bank really comes down to understanding when to save and when to splurge—and by ā€œsplurge,ā€ I don’t mean spending a fortune. I mean don’t buy the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel option when quality actually matters. In this video I walk through the categories where you can save big and still get an amazing result (like rugs, throw pillows, art, frames, and even paint), and the areas where cutting costs usually backfires (like curtains, flooring, and countertops). I talk about why most people should save on rugs unless you’re truly a rug connoisseur, and how a classic jute rug or a mass-produced ā€œvintage lookā€ rug can still look beautiful. I also get very opinionated about curtains: off-the-shelf panels are almost always too short and too narrow, and good curtains need weight, drape, and often lining. Then I get into the ā€œplease don’t do thisā€ categories—cheap flooring that swells the second water hits it, and bargain laminate counters that you’ll regret (and buyers will too). I wrap up with my decision filters: how much use an item will get, who’s using it (kids/pets), and how temporary your living situation is—because the right buy depends on your real life.
