About This Video

In this episode of my “seven deadly decorating sins,” I’m walking you through seven of the worst things you can do to your home—and, more importantly, how to fix them. I cover the big visual offenders like mismatched flooring (it makes a space feel disjointed and updated piecemeal) and rooms where everything is the exact same height, which is a dead giveaway that the design is falling flat. My goal is always cohesion and movement—low, medium, and high elements that keep your eye traveling around the room. I also get into the stuff that’s surprisingly easy to overlook: not having any houseplants (real or faux—yes, faux is fine, fight me), taking on too much DIY at once, and buying furniture without measuring first. I share the simple tricks I actually use, like painter’s tape on the floor (and even cardboard boxes) to test a piece’s footprint before you commit. Then I talk about why matching furniture sets feel cookie-cutter and dated, and I end with the design sin that bothers me the most: cool, bluish light bulbs. Swap to warm lighting (or smart bulbs) and your whole home instantly feels more inviting—and honestly, you’ll look better too.
