Join me for a cold morning of bird in flight photography at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. I'll be using the Nikon Z8 and the amazing Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S PF telephoto prime lens. The birds didn't come very close on this morning of photography, but I still managed to bag a few keepers. About This Video

In this video I’m out at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge on a cold morning chasing sandhill cranes in flight with the Nikon Z8 and the Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S PF. The birds didn’t really cooperate distance-wise—they stayed farther out than I wanted—but that’s real life with wildlife, and I still managed to come away with a few keepers. I talk through what I’m seeing in the field, what I’m trying to do with tracking and timing, and how I approach bird-in-flight shots when the action isn’t right on top of you. A big part of this one is just showing what the 600 PF looks like in an actual field test: long lens, moving subjects, cold conditions, and constantly adjusting as the cranes change direction and altitude. If you’re thinking about the Z8 for birds or you’re curious whether the 600mm f/6.3 PF has the reach and handling to be a go-to wildlife prime, this is the kind of outing that tells you more than a spec sheet. I also point you to some of the gear and accessories I use and links/discount codes if you want to check them out.
