This one started out like a pretty normal morning bird photography run for me at Harrison Bay State Park. I was out with my Nikon Z8 and the Nikon 600mm f/6.3 VR S PF, working the usual suspects I tend to find this time of year—Great Blue Heron, Carolina Wren, and whatever else wanted to cooperate. I’m walking through what I’m looking for in the field, how I’m handling the lens, and what it’s like using this setup when you’re just trying to get solid, repeatable bird shots without overthinking it. But the fun part happens after I’m basically done and heading home. Right outside the HBSP entrance in the Day Use area, I spot American White Pelicans—and that’s where the “quick morning” turns into an actual little adventure. I’m reacting in real time, trying to get position, angles, and opportunities as they move, and it turns into a great real-world test of the Z8 + 600 PF combo for birds.
