About This Video

In this video I’m taking my Nikon Z8 and the Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S out of my usual wildlife comfort zone and into a music photography night with an absolutely awesome band: Gold Plated Gold. It’s my first time photographing them again since 2014, so I start by looking back at images from that older set and then jump into the newer shoot. If you’ve ever wondered what a “normal” 50mm prime looks like in a real, low-light, fast-moving situation, this is exactly that—no studio setup, just me working with what the venue gives me. The big takeaway is how reliable the Z8 + 50mm f/1.8 S combo can be when the lighting is unpredictable and you need quick autofocus, clean files, and a lens that stays sharp while still giving you that nice subject separation. I also point you to Gold Plated Gold’s album “The Liars Club” (stream it, or grab it on Bandcamp), and I include my usual links to the gear and accessories I use to keep things running—filters, support, and my full kit list—so you can see what I’m working with outside of birds and field tests.
