About This Video

In this easy watercolor floral composition tutorial, I walk you through how I build a loose, balanced bouquet step by step—perfect if you’re a beginner and want something relaxing but still really pretty. We start by placing the primary flowers first (00:25), because once those “main characters” are on the page, it’s so much easier to know where everything else should go. I show you how I paint fluffy petals with soft, watery washes, then add dainty buds so the composition feels varied and not too uniform. After that, we move into greenery in layers (08:17 and 19:43), which is one of my favorite beginner-friendly ways to make a floral piece look full without overthinking it. I add a first layer of simple leaves, then sprinkle in wildflower-style fillers (10:44) to connect empty spaces and create movement. Finally, I deepen the painting with a second layer of leaves for contrast and depth—this is where the composition really comes to life. If you’ve ever felt stuck on “what do I add next?” this paint-along will give you a clear, repeatable process you can use for so many floral layouts.
