In this Valentine’s Day paint-along, I’m walking you through a loose watercolor flower heart wreath—step by step, in real time—so you can relax and practice your floral fundamentals without overthinking it. We start by talking supplies and setting up a simple heart shape to guide the composition. Then I show you how I build the wreath with a mix of roses, a few standard loose flowers, and small filler shapes so the heart feels full but still airy and “loose.” As we go, I focus on the beginner-friendly skills that make the biggest difference: controlling water, letting layers dry, and using light-to-dark layering for depth. I add a first layer of leaves to get the greenery in place, tuck in buds to break up the bigger blooms, and then come back with a second layer of leaves for contrast. At the end, we add quick details to the flowers to bring everything together—simple marks that make the wreath feel finished while keeping it approachable.
