In this video I’m having a quick break off the track and getting stuck into a problem I’ve been seeing with my snorkel: it’s basically acting like a hoover in convoy and loading the airbox up with dust way too fast. I run through how the raised air intake “ram air” style top works (great on the highway for cooler air and a bit of efficiency), but why it’s not always your best mate when you’re following other vehicles in powder. I crack the airbox open to show what’s going on inside, then compare a few snorkel tops and explain the cyclone/dust bowl pre-cleaner setup. The whole idea is to spin the incoming air, drop the dust into a bowl, and stop it reaching your main air filter—so you’re not constantly pulling the filter out and trying to bang it clean. I also show how simple the dust bowl is to fit and empty (one bolt), and I share a tip to check the one-way drain valve on the bottom of the airbox so water/mud can get out. To finish up, I swap in a Terrain Tamer air filter and show the build quality differences versus a cheaper filter—foam thickness, sealing, and overall construction. My takeaway: use the ram-air top for highways, swap to a pre-cleaner for dusty tracks, and don’t skimp on service items if you want your motor to last.
