In this video I’m on my 45 Series Land Cruiser with the 3FE petrol, and I’m fixing the exact thing a few of you noticed in the last clip—how tappy and noisy it was. I run through a basic, home-DIY way to adjust tappets/valve clearances step-by-step. Nothing fancy here: pull the hoses, undo the rocker cover bolts (don’t lose the little rubbers and washers), and then work through inlet and exhaust rockers in order. I also show you how to tell inlet vs exhaust by looking at the tops of the valve springs—smooth tops are exhaust, and the ones with the lip are inlet. I turn the engine over until the valves I’m checking are fully released so you’ve got movement, then I set clearances using feeler gauges. On my setup (hot spec from the sticker that used to be on my rocker cover), I’m running 0.20 mm on the intake and 0.35 mm on the exhaust. The rear rocker was the troublemaker for me because I’d previously had oiling issues back there, so I show cracking the locknut, using a screwdriver on the adjuster, and sneaking up on the right “bite.” I also explain why I’d rather be a touch loose than too tight—too tight is definitely not okay and it won’t run great. Once it’s set, I fire it up with the cover off so you can see oil flowing through the rockers, and you can hear it’s already sounding a lot better.
