About This Video

Gentlemen, welcome to the pain. In this video I break down a clean miss on a big public land doe—frame by frame—so we can actually learn something instead of me pretending it didn’t happen. I’m set up deep on a big piece of public with a ditch system and a creek, sitting on feeding sign, tracks, droppings, and a couple rubs. She comes “straight down the pipe” left to right, and at 40 yards (right on the edge of what I like to shoot ethically) I decide to send it because the wind/thermals were about to make the decision for me. The whole point here is jumping the string—what it is, what it isn’t, and why you can’t fully “solve” it. The doe doesn’t react to the bow; she reacts to the arrow noise as it’s almost there. In about 1/6th of a second she drops and rolls so hard she’s basically laying a shoulder into the dirt, and my arrow sails over her back by inches. I also walk through what I ruled out: my sight level was centered, third axis is good, and I ranged with angle compensation (HCD), so the steep angle wasn’t the culprit. The takeaway is simple: respect how athletic deer are, don’t stretch shots if you don’t have to, and aim low—low enough to account for the drop, without turning it into a clean miss under them.
