This video dives into why I favor the 7mm-08 for deer hunting and how it compares in ballistics. About This Video

A couple weeks ago I made a 6.5 Creedmoor vs .308 video, and I ended it by saying I’d still pick 7mm-08 Remington. That kicked a hornet’s nest in the comments, and I think I accidentally woke up the cult of 7mm-08… which I’m a member of. In this video I’m not just saying “7mm-08 is better,” I’m showing you with numbers. I break down the quick history and design differences: .308 (1952), 7mm-08 (a .308 necked down to 7mm, commercialized in 1980), and 6.5 Creedmoor (2007, built around long, high-BC bullets). Then I run ballistic comparisons across three hunting-style load categories: old-school Remington Core-Lokt, Hornady ELD-X/Precision Hunter-style bullets, and a Barnes LRX handload concept. I keep the assumptions consistent (short action, 24" barrel, ~8–12 lb rifle, no suppressor/muzzle brake for recoil discussion) and talk recoil in real-world terms: .308 is totally manageable, 6.5 drops recoil about 30%, and 7mm-08 only adds back roughly 10% while giving you a lot more “performance per grain of powder.” Inside 500 yards—where most deer hunting actually happens—the 7mm-08 consistently looks like the most efficient, hunting-practical option, especially when you start caring about velocity thresholds for reliable bullet expansion.
