About This Video

Last week I mentioned the 7mm-08 being underappreciated, and I told you guys, “Don’t get me started on the .243 Winchester.” Well… you did. In this video I take a deep dive on the .243 as a legit deer cartridge—one you can actually evolve with and hunt with for a long time, not just something you hand to a kid and forget about. I break down what the .243 is (basically a .308 case necked down to 6mm), what bullet weights it runs, and why it’s so pleasant to shoot. I also do a quick recoil test with a plain-jane Ruger American (no brake, no suppressor) and then get nerdy with ballistic charts comparing .243 vs .308 across a few common loads: 100gr Core-Lokt style soft points, Hornady 90gr ELD-X, and Barnes monolithic options like the TTSX/LRX class. The .243 is fast, flat, and accurate, but energy bleeds off faster than a .30-cal—so bullet selection and realistic range matter. I wrap with the real “gotcha” for .243 guys: twist rates. A lot of factory 1:10 barrels won’t stabilize longer, high-BC 6mm bullets like the 95gr LRX, and that’s where faster-twist rifles (or a 6mm Creedmoor) start to make sense.
