About This Video

Gentlemen, in this video I’m on a public land pre-rut sit that gets exciting fast. On the walk in I bumped a deer—nothing crazy, not a hard bump—but it told me deer were already on their feet in that 4:00–5:00 p.m. window. It’s October 20th, we had about a 12° temperature drop, and that was the first day I started seeing really obvious signs of the pre-rut kicking off: more daylight movement and bucks starting to tend and move does around. I break down how this spot sets up and why it’s a rut-time killer: I’ve got about 40 yards of timber in front of me that transitions into the best bedding area in the neighborhood. During the rut, bucks love cruising that downwind edge to scent-check for hot does, and that’s exactly what I think was happening. Then it happens—an absolute bruiser, 20 yards, frontal… and I can’t shoot because I’m losing light like crazy in the woods and inside a blind. I grunted him back with two light grunts like I always talk about, he came straight down the pipe, and I hit full draw… but my peep and pins were basically dead. It hurts, but I’m not quitting—because I operate best on a redemption arc.
