Then I walk through what actually changes in the real world: recoil (about 30% more in .308), what that does to your ability to stay in the scope, and why that matters when you’re trying to watch a deer disappear into public land brush or spot your own impact at distance. From there I get into trajectory, expansion windows, sectional density, and wind—because wind is what humbles people, not whether your rifle is a 1 MOA gun. Inside 500 yards, the drop differences between common hunting loads are way smaller than most folks think. The big separation is wind drift, where 6.5’s higher BC buys you forgiveness when your wind call isn’t perfect. For terminal performance, I give .308 the versatility edge (bullet weights from roughly 110–180+), and I lay out simple “pick this if…” scenarios for whitetails in timber, bears in brush, open-country mule deer/pronghorn, recoil-averse shooters, and lightweight mountain rifles.
