I picked up what I’m calling the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G for just £50 (they’re about £150 new) and, honestly, it’s exceeded my expectations. No, it’s not going to be the fastest thing in the world, but for the money you’re getting a seriously nice 90Hz OLED screen that looks way sharper than most cheap phones. On top of that, you’ve got a 50MP main camera that actually looks pretty good, an ultra-wide option, and a design that doesn’t scream “budget” at all—just looks like a normal Samsung. The big trade-off is performance and memory: the CPU is slower and the 4GB RAM is the main downside because you’ll feel apps filling up in the background. But day-to-day, that OLED + 90Hz combo makes it feel like a much nicer phone, and it should help from a battery-life perspective too. I even compared it to the Galaxy A52s 5G, which was a legendary budget Samsung for a lot of people—similar screen clarity and similar 50MP camera, even if the A52s does 120Hz and 4K recording. It’s kind of wild that a ~£150 phone can cover so much of what a ~£300 phone used to do, and I genuinely think this could be the next “A52-style” bargain upgrade.
