About This Video

In this video I take a proper look at the Lenovo ThinkPad X395 in 2024, because it’s genuinely a brilliant option if you want a decent laptop without spending a billion pound on something brand new. I paid £110 on eBay (they’re usually £150–£200), and my config is a Ryzen 5 Pro 3500U, 16GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. I go over the ports, the overall condition for the money, and why I like the clean, plain ThinkPad design—plus you get a full keyboard (no numpad), touchpad, and the classic TrackPoint. One of the standout bits for the price is the 1080p touchscreen. It’s sharp, responsive, and makes Windows 11 look great on a smaller display (I run 125% scaling because 100% is tiny and 150% feels too restrictive). I also cover the keyboard feel and backlight, the weird Fn/Ctrl placement (and how you can swap it in BIOS), and the different navigation methods—TrackPoint included, even though I’m not really a fan of it. Performance-wise it’s snappy and honestly overpowered for what I use it for, even in Windows power saving. The main downside is battery life: it’s a bit hit and miss, and mine is clearly aging (it can drop from 30% to 0%). I also talk about the “quiet mode” behaviour that can tank performance when the laptop gets hot or the battery gets low, and I show how I charge it cheaply using a 67W Anker USB-C charger and a long USB-C cable.
