About This Video

This is part two of my “basic vs next level” camping/overlanding gear series, and the whole point is simple: make camp easier and more comfortable—especially if you’re trying to get your wife, kids, or friends to actually enjoy coming with you. I talk through where the “basic” option works fine, and where spending a little more (or choosing the right system) genuinely changes the experience and makes it feel more like home. I start with staying warm in cold weather. Buddy heaters can work, but I’m not a huge fan because of condensation, so if you want next level for winter/fall/spring, I’d look at a diesel heater (or a Propex-style setup). Then I get into fire: regular fires and propane pits are fine, but a smokeless fire pit (like the Warmbond) is a big upgrade because you still get real heat without smelling like smoke, and you can even cook on it. From there it’s power, shade, and sleep—three things that make or break a trip. A solid power bank opens up fridges, heaters, and charging, and for shade I compare cheap pop-up tents to vehicle-mounted awnings and the Moonshade. For sleeping, I cover truck bed platforms (I’m liking the FLATED system) and my #1 comfort upgrade: the HEST Foamy. I also talk rooftop tents (FSR Odyssey is my favorite so far) and a bonus “fun” upgrade: the Yakima EXO hitch system for bikes and expandable storage.
