In this follow-up, I’m giving you my honest 3-month review of the Car Tech Studio CarPlay/Android Auto head unit in my Lexus GX470. A ton of you have asked how it’s holding up long-term, so I wanted to answer it all in one place—especially because this is the kind of upgrade that can be awesome on an older rig, or a complete headache if it’s glitchy. I’m also testing it in basically the worst conditions: a snowstorm and about 11° outside, which is usually when electronics start acting weird. I cover boot time (what I’m actually seeing day-to-day), wireless CarPlay functionality, and the apps I use most. I also talk sound quality—my GX is a 2004, so the factory speakers were toast, and I’ve upgraded them, which definitely helps you get the most out of any modern head unit. Fitment-wise, the big win is it looks super flush in the dash and doesn’t scream “cheap aftermarket.” After running a few different CarPlay units over the years, this one has been the best so far for the price, and I’ve had zero issues in the first few months.
