In this video I’m installing my third aftermarket Android/Apple CarPlay head unit, this time in my Lexus GX470. This GX is one of the oldest vehicles I’ve owned in a long time, and mine didn’t even come with factory navigation—just a basic CD player—so getting CarPlay up in my field of vision is a huge quality-of-life and safety upgrade. I walk through what comes in the Car Tech Studio box (manuals, GX-specific harness, GPS, mic, antenna, and all the AV/camera leads) and I explain the big GX470 detail you need to know: you’ve got different audio options (Mark Levinson vs Pioneer/JBL), and you can verify it by checking the amp under the seat or just calling Lexus with your VIN like I did. I also show the install process and the little “learn from my pain” moments—like not overcomplicating trim removal, using a Phillips screwdriver, and paying attention to the bracket alignment so the back matches the instruction photos. I talk through the easiest way I’ve found to run backup camera wiring and how the reverse trigger works. Once it’s in, I jump into CarPlay and mess around with Spotify and settings, and the big takeaway is this unit feels fast and responsive compared to my older setup that took almost a full minute to boot (and delayed my backup camera). Sound-wise it puts out a lot of power—honestly a little too much bass out of the box for my taste—but overall it’s probably the best head unit I’ve used so far, and I’ll do a longer-term update later.
