In this Rolodex Series video, I’m leaning all the way into what I love most about a gel plate—the surprise, the layers, and that moment when a print turns into something way better than you planned. I’m working on 3" x 5" Rolodex art cards (the UmWow Studio Spines), and I’m using my gel press plate and brayer to build quick, playful backgrounds with acrylic paint. This is one of those sessions where the process is the point: roll the paint, pull the print, see what you get, and then respond to it. I also bring in simple tools that make a big difference for clean, bold results—like black gesso for grounding the page and a circle stencil for easy structure and movement. If you’re new to gel printing, this is a really friendly way to start because you’re not trying to make “perfect” prints—you’re making usable, interesting surfaces for mixed media. My takeaway: let the gel plate do what it does best, and then keep layering until the card feels like you.
